Helping Children with Autism Prepare for the Transition to School

CTV Toronto visits Lumenus’ Back-to-School Camp to see how specialized programming is helping young children build confidence before school begins.

Starting school is an exciting milestone, but it can also be stressful. New environments, new routines, new people, and new expectations are significant changes. For young children with autism, having an opportunity to experience and practice those changes ahead of time can help support the transition.

That thinking is what led to the creation of our Back-to-School Camp, a two-week program for children ages 3-6 with autism. By creating a school-like environment, the program help children become familiar with routines, expectations, and patterns they may encounter at school.

On August 26, CTV Toronto visited our camp to see the program in action, meet some of our campers, and speak with Farrah Ladha about the importance and impact of preparation and routine.

This camp reflects our approach to support at Lumenus: developing responsive programs that are based on the individual needs of children and families.
